Progress in BlueMarine.Com3 project

IMAQUA is proud to be part of the BlueMarine.Com3 project and of the progress we have made with shrimp breeding in Belgium in the past year.

The BlueMarine3.Com project is funded by the Flemish government through Agency for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (VLAIO) and facilitated by the Blue Cluster program. It is a collaboration between different groups of Ghent University: the IOF consortium BLUEGent (Dr. ir. Margriet Drouillon), the Laboratory of Aquaculture & Artemia Reference Center (Prof. Dr. ir. Peter Bossier), the Laboratory for Phycology (Prof. Dr. Olivier De Clerck) and the Laboratory for Environmental Toxicology (Prof. Dr. Colin Janssen), and the following companies: Aquacultuur Oostende, Colruyt Group, DEME, IMAQUA, Proviron and SIOEN.

Dr Mathias Corteel joins IMAQUA

We are thrilled to announce that Dr Mathias Corteel, a veterinarian specialised in shrimp diseases, has joined IMAQUA’s research team as Senior project manager, after a 4-year stay in the United States where he worked for BASF animal nutrition. 

“Joining IMAQUA is like coming home,” says Mathias Corteel. “Managing director of IMAQUA, João Lima and I did our Ph.D.’s together and we were a good team back then. I admire what João and the IMAQUA team have already achieved in only 5 years, and look forward very much to contributing to the further development of the company!”

Dr. Mathias Corteel obtained his degree in veterinary medicine in 2005, specializing in research and aquaculture. Since then, he has been hooked on research into diseases of shrimp and fish, first during his Ph.D. at the faculty of veterinary medicine, Ghent University, later working for INVE Aquaculture. Most of his research has focused on the pathogenesis of White Spot Syndrome Virus, namely how the virus gains entry to its hosts and what measures can be taken to control infection and disease. He (co)authored 12 publications, 2 book chapters and several trade magazine articles.

IMAQUA’s doctorandus under Baekeland Mandate

Introducing Kateřina Řeháková –  IMAQUA’s Phd candidate under Baekeland Mandate, granted by VLAIO (Flanders Innovation & Entrepreneurship organisation)

During her academic years Kateřina worked in the laboratories of Central European Institute of Technology (CEITEC) and University of Veterinary and Pharmaceutical Sciences in Czech Republic as well as Laboratory of Microbiology, Faculty of sciences in UGent, where she developed various laboratory skills in fields of microbiology, molecular biology and chemical, biochemical and physical analysis.

In 2019 Kateřina has joined IMAQUA as a Junior laboratory technician in development, validation and valorisation of shrimp health products.

For upcoming 4 years Kateřina will be working alongside IMAQUA’s and UGent’s scientists on the PhD research project “Establishment of an innovative contract research platform to support shrimp health product R&D”.

This project aims at expanding IMAQUA’s service portfolio to a wider range of shrimp immune parameters as well as contributing to a consensus on shrimp immune parameters within the scientific community.

IMAQUA moves to its new premises

Since July 2020 IMAQUA is moving from the premises of Gent University to the new private site at SME zone Lozen Boer in Lochristi, Belgium. Here IMAQUA is building its new state of the art testing facilities and laboratory… (to be continued)

Kick-start of the project BlueMarine3.Com

IMAQUA is eager to start working on the exciting multi species hatchery project BlueMarine3.Com. The general aim of the project is to expand the knowledge about hatchery technology for different species groups (seaweed, molluscs and crustaceans), with special attention to the local conditions in Flanders and the possible biological and technological integration of these species groups in one hatchery.

IMAQUA launches a state of the art feeding trial facility composed of 24 custom-made tanks. Each tank has a capacity of 290 L and an individual complete water filtration system. This facility was designed for delivering the highest quality scientific results.

IMAQUA installs a state of the art shrimp RAS nursery facility based on the Landing PILOT™ unit developed by LandIng Aquaculture. This facility was designed with a double purpose, to satisfy the needs of  shrimp juveniles for the tests made at IMAQUA and to offer the possibility of performing nutrition tests on early shrimp developmental stages.
